Lawn Care/Basics for Homeowners-Lawn Care/Weed Identification and Control/Weed Control/Chemical Weed Control
Herbicides are pesticides used to control weeds. They can be selective (control a particular pest without harming related organisms) or non-selective (control nearly all related organisms). Preemergence herbicides are applied before the weed seedlings emerge from the soil. Postemergence herbicides are applied to weeds after they have emerged from the soil. Contact herbicides affect only the parts of the plant they come into contact with, while systematic herbicides are taken into the plant and moved throughout it. Whenever any pesticide is used, be sure to read, understand, and follow all label directions for the safety and most effective handling and application. The next two sections in the Weed Control menu discuss chemical application of herbicides to two of the most common groups of weeds: Broadleaf Weeds and Annual Grass Weeds.
